A Lecture on the Adriatic GreenLab for Students from Sweden on the Island of Prvić

As part of the project “STEM as a Driver of Development”, carried out by FabLab with the support of the Thematic Systemic Support programme of the National Foundation for Civil Society Development, activities continue to strengthen sustainable communities and create local STEM ecosystems. The goal of the project is to encourage young people, schools, and local communities to actively engage in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, thereby fostering an environment in which a new generation of innovators and researchers can grow.

On September 20, 2025, Adriatic GreenLab participated in an event on the island of Prvić, within the long-standing programme Creative Days of Faust Vrančić, recognized as a meeting point of science, technology, heritage, and creativity. In this setting, a special lecture was held, dedicated to the future of the island and the development of innovative initiatives.

The event brought together students from Sweden who are studying traditional skills and local heritage and connecting them with modern technologies and sustainable development solutions. The students presented examples of activities they carry out on the island—from resource mapping to small-scale sustainable experiments—and emphasized the importance of learning from local traditions as a foundation for future innovation.

Representatives of the local community also took part, including fishermen, teachers, members of the association Otok, and residents who have long been involved in the development of Prvić. A constructive discussion emerged on how knowledge, culture, and technological creativity can together shape the future Science Center on the island.

Special attention was given to a presentation by architect Roberto Vdović, who outlined the vision of the Adriatic GreenLab initiative.
AGL is conceived as a model of a self-sustaining island community—a living laboratory where:

  • local knowledge and craftsmanship
  • natural and environmental resources
  • digital and maker technologies
  • open innovation
  • and sustainable lifestyles

meet and interact.

He highlighted that islands like Prvić have exceptional potential for developing innovations rooted in nature and tradition, combined with modern tools such as 3D modelling and renewable energy technologies.

He also presented a long-term idea for establishing a Center for Science and Sustainable Development on the island—a space where residents, children, youth, experts, and international students could learn, create, and explore together.

FabLab and AGL – Technology, Creativity, and Community

During the lecture, visitors had the opportunity to explore some of FabLab’s activities, including:

  • demonstrations of 3D printers,
  • simple technical games made using 3D printing,
  • educational STEM/STEAM workshops for all ages.

These activities demonstrated how technology can serve as a tool for strengthening community bonds and encouraging creativity among both young people and adults.
